The secret to any regular task is to have a clear schedule. So if you are to follow only one of my many House Cleaning Tips then you should make it this one. Housekeeping cleaning and home cleaning is something that needs to be maintained and done on a regular basis. But, you do not have to do everything all at once. Breaking down the tasks into those that are daily, and those that are perhaps part of an annual spring clean will help you keep on top of your housekeeping cleaning. So to help you manage your home cleaning I have developed a Housekeeping Schedule.

    Everyday jobs

As a general rule one should always clean as one goes anyway. However, it pays to do some cleaning tasks on a daily basis. Some of these will follow your daily routine anyway, so it is often a case of tidying up after yourself. However, there are some specific cleaning tasks that will take a bit longer. But it will be worth it, as you will find keeping things clean and tidy a lot easier. Here is my list of daily tasks:

    1. Make up all the beds
    2. Tidy up clutter
    3. Collect any dirty clothes and place them in the laundry bin or basket
    4. Give the bath and shower drains a good rinse out
    5. Wipe down the bath and shower to stop residue building up
    6. Keep dishes washed and put away – a lot easier if you have a dish washer
    7. Clean down the kitchen sink
    8. Empty the kitchen rubbish
    9. Keep your kitchen counters clean and tidy, wiping up when not in use
    10. Clean up any cooking spillage on the oven and hob
    11. Sweep or vacuum the kitchen floor

    Weekly jobs

    1. Change your bed linen – (in hot climates/seasons you should ideally do this twice a week)
    2. Change all the towels
    3. Vacuum all the carpets
    4. Give the kitchen, bathroom floors a mop. Clean any other hard floor areas
    5. Dust everywhere, don’t forget to dust behind things. Don’t forget the office, and computer etc.
    6. Clean all door handles and light switches. This is a simple case of given them a quick wipe
    7. Clean the bathrooms thoroughly, including shower, bath and toilet.
    8. Clean the front of kitchen appliances, including oven door, microwave and fridge (throw out any out of date food), wiping cupboard doors. Clean the kitchen bin.
    9. Do the weekly iron

    Monthly jobs

    1. Clean the phones, and computers (especially keyboards)
    2. Thoroughly clean the inside of the fridge, removing contents and cleaning the shelves
    3. Clean the inside of the over, and grill
    4. Dust around the ceilings, remove cobwebs that you may have missed
    5. Clean the windows inside and out
    6. Turn your mattress
    7. Polish mirrors and frames
    8. Clear out clutter from drawers – if you don’t use it, throw it out
    9. Vacuum under beds and sofas if you are a bit quick on your weekly vacuum
    10. Polish wooden furniture
    11. Dust all those hidden areas such as the top of the doors, picture and dado rails etc.

    Annual Jobs

Whether it is the Spring Clean – or the start of the new year – this is the time to thoroughly deep clean your home to add years to its life

    1. Remove rugs and thoroughly vacuum underneath
    2. Make sure you dust and clean any ceiling fixtures
    3. Check the guttering
    4. Sort through all your paperwork – shred unwanted stuff and tidy up paperwork in general
    5. Clean the walls
    6. Dust and clean your books, CDs, DVDs
    7. Move heavy furniture and clean beneath
    8. Consider getting professional carpet cleaner in to shampoo carpets
    9. Dry clean curtains, quilts and bed covers
    10. Check all those neglected storage places, whether it be the shed, garage summer house – and de-clutter. Any old broken appliances take to recycle centre.

If you keep on top of your cleaning, none of this will seem onerous, and you should be able to keep control of your housekeeping. The schedule above helps put some structure to the task of keeping a clean and tidy home.
